Living with HIV FAQs
Common questions during application

Concerned about your application for Life Insurance?
Your HIV status alone is unlikely to preclude you from taking out life insurance. In the past, obtaining life insurance cover may have been difficult for people living with HIV. With advances in medical treatments reducing rates of infection, and a better understanding of HIV, eligibility for life insurance products has increased. Nowadays, your HIV status alone is unlikely to preclude you from taking out life insurance.
NobleOak will support you on your life insurance journey and make the process as easy as possible.
If you would like to discuss your options or need support with your application or policy, give us a call and we can guide you through the process.
Can I still get life insurance if I have HIV?
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that we will consider your HIV status as part of your application, as well as considering your general health, whether you follow your treatment plan and your overall medical history.
Based on that, we may offer you cover without any restrictions, or add a loading (a higher premium) or exclusions to your policy. In some situations, we may not be able to provide you with insurance cover.
When applying for life insurance, we will ask you a range of health-related questions. If you disclose an HIV-positive status, we will ask additional questions about your diagnosis, treatment plan, viral load and related conditions.
Any questions we ask you will be done in a sensitive manner.
We will request your doctor’s details and your consent for us to write to your doctor to obtain a medical report. The report will likely include details such as your CD4 count, viral load, other blood test results and treatment plan. If your blood tests are not recent, we may ask you to have a blood test.
It is important to give as much accurate information as possible so that we can provide you with the right level of cover for your needs.
Disclosing your HIV status does not necessarily mean that you can’t claim for HIV. However, there are certain instances where an exclusion may be applied. If this is the case, we would always inform you before you agree to commence the policy.
For example, our Trauma insurance pays a benefit for Accidental HIV Infection contracted through occupation or medical procedures. Terms and conditions apply.
NobleOak’s Life insurance, Income Protection Cover and Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) insurance cover does not exclude HIV. At underwriting, in some cases, a loading may apply and, in other cases, you may receive cover without restriction, depending on your individual circumstances. In certain scenarios, we may not be able to offer you cover at all.
NobleOak believes in our customers, and that everyone should be able to secure financial protection for themselves and their loved ones. NobleOak will do our best to provide the cover you need.
If you would like to understand your cover options better, at NobleOak we can help you navigate the application process and get a level of cover to suit your circumstances.
